Friday night: Guyer was looking for its third win in program history during a game at preseason fifth-ranked Stephenville.
Building a program: Coffey knows something about building a program. Guyer High School opened in 2005, and Coffey is part of the first class that will have been at the school all four years.
His freshman year, Guyer didn’t play a varsity schedule. It was 0-10 in its first official season, and 1-9 last year. This season, the Wildcats defeated Newman Smith 31-14 to start the year 1-0.
“Big turnaround,” Coffey joked.
With no tradition, no uniforms and no offense, it’s difficult starting a program, Coffey said.
“It’s tough, but it feels a lot better once you start winning,” he said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but we have a lot of great coaches who are helping us do it.”
Quite a game day: A trip to Lincoln for Nebraska’s season-opening win against Western Michigan was a thrill for Coffey. It was only his second visit to the school.
“We got there at 2 o’clock, and there were thousands of people there already,” Coffey said.
He stood on the sideline until kickoff, then watched the game from the stands with fellow Texan and NU offensive line recruit Nick Ash.
“It was awesome,” Coffey said. “I always heard how cool it was, but there’s nothing like experiencing it.”
This summer, Coffey went on a football road trip that included stops at Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Nebraska. He committed to the Huskers in July.
Top of his class: Once at Nebraska, Coffey plans to study engineering. With a perfect grade-point average that makes him the top student in his class, Coffey says he should be able to handle the workload.
This year, his schedule includes advanced placement courses in English, physics, calculus and economics.
