The Scene: Will "GameDay" come back?

BY BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star

Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 - 01:00:16 am CDT

Looks like it could be an early Saturday morning for the Nebraska events staff.

Last year, when ESPN’s “GameDay” crew broadcasted its live show from Lincoln for the USC game, Ervin Williams, events staff specialist, said he was at Memorial Stadium before 5 a.m.

Get the alarm clock ready, Erv, because “GameDay” might be making a return trip. Nebraska officials last week were alerted the Nebraska-Missouri game was high on the network’s list of games to attend next weekend for its weekly pre-game show.

Wisconsin-Ohio State was probably on that list, too, but here’s guessing an undefeated Missouri team trumps the Badgers after Wisconsin’s second-half meltdown Saturday in the “Big House.”

“It just makes for a long day, because we’ve got to bring in people to take care of that,” Williams said, “and then taking care of accommodating the students.”

If ESPN visits, the 9 a.m. show will be broadcast inside Memorial Stadium, as it was last year, and for the 2001 Oklahoma game. Williams said it’s likely they’ll set up shop in the northwest corner of the stadium, presumably with the “Nebraska” entrance as the backdrop.

Williams said Nebraska would know later today whether “GameDay” will be in Lincoln.

Getting bagged: Those who entered Memorial Stadium early Saturday noticed the seats covered with more than 80,000 promotional Alltel bags.

Williams said workers began laying out the bags Wednesday and didn’t finish until Friday. One of the bags, Williams said, contained a grand prize.

“I don’t know where it is. The wind might have blown it away,” Williams said, smiling. “I saw a couple of them flying across the parking lot yesterday.”

Pick ’em, please: Somebody want to take my place this week in picking college games?

Seriously, this is insane. Michigan looks like it won’t win a game for the rest of eternity in the first half, then somewhat miraculously beats No. 9 Wisconsin. One moment, it’s declared Miami has its swagger back, and the next, the Hurricanes are losing at home to upstart North Carolina. Navy stuns Wake Forest.

And who in the world would’ve picked young Alabama to go on the road and beat might Georgia?

(OK, so the week wasn’t a total loss).

Going deep

* Notable visitors seen on the sideline before Saturday’s game included Rush Limbaugh, Larry the Cable Guy and former Nebraska men’s basketball player Bill Jackman.

* These games are becoming recruiting tools for more than just football, what with all the basketball and wrestling recruits on the sideline, too.
