Future Husker: Nick Ash

Saturday, Oct 04, 2008 - 12:42:26 am CDT

Keller High School turned some heads last week during its game against  Trinity High, the National Prep Poll’s preseason top-ranked team in the nation. Trinity (from Euless, Texas) scored late in the third quarter and needed a last-minute stand to hold off Keller 17-10.

Keller had a 4-6 record last season, and its first three wins this year came against teams that were a combined 1-10. Still, Keller had its chances to end defending Class 5A state champion Trinity’s 18-game winning streak.

“Everybody said they were supposed to blow us out of the water,” Nick Ash said. “It was a really close game. I think we shocked them.”

Keller, Texas (Keller High)

6-foot-5, 265, Offensive lineman

Of note: Rated by Rivals.com as the No. 28 offensive guard in the country, Ash is also considered one of the top 100 players in the state of Texas.

Friday night: Entered a home game against Keller Central with a 3-1 record.

Trinity’s running back was Dontrayevous Robinson, another Nebraska commitment. Robinson was coming off an injury.

“We held him to about 60 yards, but he looked pretty darn good,” Ash said.

A regular in Lincoln: Following his game Friday night, Ash planned to travel to Lincoln for Saturday’s Husker game against Missouri.

Ash also attended Nebraska home games  against Western Michigan and Virginia Tech. He’d planned to attend the New Mexico State game, too, but Hurricane Ike halted his travel plans. It helps make traveling easier, Ash said, that his father works for an airline.

One of his first trips to Lincoln was for the Spring Game.

“The Spring Game was just Nebraska vs. Nebraska, so you didn’t get the whole atmosphere of game day,” he said. “The past few games have been pretty amazing. Last week I sat next to Cody Green and his family, so it’s good to talk to some of the other commits.”

Loves the line: An offensive tackle this season, Ash says he could play guard or tackle in college. He’s played on the offensive line since his peewee football days.

“In peewee, the big kids couldn’t run the ball and hurt the little ones, so growing up I was a lineman,” Ash said.

Given the chance, would Ash want to be a running back or quarterback for a day?

“I wouldn’t,” he said. “I just love being an offensive lineman, and being able to hit somebody every play. I love it.”
