Future Husker: J.T. Kerr

BY BRENT C. WAGNER / Lincoln Journal Star

Saturday, Oct 25, 2008 - 12:41:49 am CDT

New school for senior season

J.T. Kerr moved to a new school during his junior year, in part so he could play on a team where he could possibly demonstrate more of what he could do as a tight end. His old school mostly worked out of a wing-T running offense.

He had one touchdown catch through two games this season before he took a hit that dislocated his shoulder and ruptured his rotator cuff. Kerr missed four games, but planned to be back on the field Friday night.

6-4, 230, tight end

Of note: Ranked by Rivals.com as a three-star prospect, Kerr is considered the 33rd-best tight end prospect in the nation.

Friday night: Scripps Ranch was 5-1 entering a game against Patrick Lee High School.

“A lot of people ask me if I’m a blocking tight end or a receiving tight end,” Kerr said. “I think I’m made for both. At my old school we ran the wing-T, so I blocked my tail off. But I’m also a good receiver — I’m fast and I run good routes. I pretty much try to catch everything.”

At Scripps Ranch, quarterback Tate Forcier is a dual threat QB that recently committed to Michigan.

Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow also attended the same high school.

“(Winslow) came by the school a few times, and I got to talk to him,” Kerr said. “He talked to me about what I need to do.”

Make me a better man

Kerr also had scholarship offers from Arizona and San Diego State, and believes Oregon, Arizona State and Florida were among the other schools considering an offer before he got hurt.

He visited Lincoln last summer and also attended Nebraska’s home game against New Mexico State. Tight ends coach Ron Brown was the one that recruited him.

“Nebraska just seemed like the best place for me,” he said. “It felt like I could become the best football player, the best person, and I loved both times I went there.”

California kid

Kerr was big into soccer — his fifth-grade traveling team took fourth place in the state — before he fell in love with football.

He’ll play high school basketball this winter, and also likes snowboarding and wakeboarding. He lives about 20 minutes from the beach.

Will Kerr be able to leave the beach behind for Nebraska?

“I’m going to have to,” he said.
