Highlight play

Bear Creek finished 8-3 this season, after going 11-3 last year and losing in the state playoff semifinals. The finals are played at Invesco Field at Mile High.

“I always wanted to play there,” Sirles said.

6-8, 300, offensive tackle

Of note: Rated by Rivals.com as the nation’s No. 54 offensive tackle prospect and the seventh-best player in Colorado.

Last week: Bear Creek lost to rival Cherry Creek 41-21 in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Sirles was a three-year starter at tackle. His highlight play this season was a hit against a player 11 inches shorter and 125 pounds lighter than Sirles.

“We ran a little screen out to our receiver, and I just went out and blasted a corner,” Sirles said. “He went flying out-of-bounds, and the whole bit. It was fun. Even their own people were like, ‘Oh,jeez.’”

It was tough to end his senior season, Sirles said, because he and three of his teammates on offense have been playing together since fourth grade.

“We won the Carnation Bowl, which is pretty much like the little kids Super Bowl, in fifth and sixth grade,” Sirles said.

The Carnation Bowl was played at Littleton Stadium.

“I remember running into the stadium under the lights and thinking that was the coolest thing ever,” he said.

Theater buff

In addition to competing in football, basketball and track, Sirles also found a liking to the school’s theater department. He’s helping with the fall play and plans to have a part in the spring musical.

Last year, he had a minor role in “Guys and Dolls.” The theater teacher, whose father is a high school football coach elsewhere, got Sirles interested.

“I gave it a shot, and fell in love with it,” he said. “You branch out more into the school, and start to know more people. It’s just a whole new experience, compared to football.”

Yelling his name

Sirles plans to attend the Nebraska-Colorado game later this month. He was never a big CU fan growing up, and liked Michigan instead. He hoped to attend Michigan, before the Wolverines’ coaching change.

He made his official visit to Lincoln for the Nebraska vs. Missouri game. Fans recognized Sirles at the game and yelled his name.

“I was like, ‘Wow, these people are serious about their football,’” he said.
