Delano could miss rest of season

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Nebraska volleyball team’s top backup at all three attacking positions may be lost for the season.
On Saturday, school officials confirmed that Brooke Delano underwent a surgical procedure Thursday night and will be out indefinitely. A release said that Delano suffered appendicitis.
“The most important thing is that Brooke gets a chance to recover and get back to health,” NU coach John Cook said. “This team has been resilient all season, and Brooke’s selflessness and willingness to do whatever it takes for us has been a great example for our team.”
A redshirt freshman, Delano has appeared in 13 matches this season. She started at outside hitter in place of Tara Mueller in September, when the Huskers won at then-No. 18 Kansas State.
On Wednesday, Delano played in place of right-side hitter Lindsey Licht when the Huskers beat Missouri in Lincoln.
Licht returned to the lineup Saturday. Had she not been able to go, Nebraska’s only option was to move walk-on middle blocker Jordan Wilberger to the right-side hitter spot.
Cook said that he won’t pull either Allison McNeal or Kaitlynn James from redshirt seasons. James, who has been slow to recover from offseason shoulder surgery, has begun to take some limited swings in practice of late.
