Raised Husker ticket price comes with new TVs

By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Thursday, Feb 19, 2009 - 07:59:58 pm CST

With new video screens on the way, Husker football season-ticket holders will see a slight increase in the price of each game ticket for the upcoming season.

They will also see two new HuskerVision screens that will be added to the northwest and northeast corners of Memorial Stadium. The stadium will now have five replay screens, which will be upgraded to high-definition this summer.

“We’ve had complaints from the people seated in the north end zone that in order to really see the replay board they have to turn around,” Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said. “There’s a board in the south end, but it’s far enough away that it’s hard for them to see.”

With the new screens, Osborne said, “There shouldn’t be anyone in the stadium who doesn’t have a good view of the replays.”

It’ll cost a little more each game to watch those screens. Season-ticket holders will pay $54 a game, up from $52 last year.

However, season-ticket holders will  pay less than they did in 2008 because there is one less home game this year. The 2009 schedule features seven home games, meaning a season-ticket holder will pay $378, compared with $416 last year.

Student tickets will remain $147 for seven games ($21 per game). Faculty will pay $51 per game.

Osborne said NU ranks in the middle of the conference when it comes to ticket prices. Nebraska’s price does fall in a similar range of many high-profile schools.

Michigan just lowered its ticket price per game from $53.75 to $50 after a miserable season. The average ticket price for a Texas season-ticket holder, meanwhile, is $62.50.

“I certainly don’t think we’re overpriced and yet we are cognizant of economic times and we certainly did not want to make a huge jump,” Osborne said.

Aside from the Nov. 7 game against Oklahoma, the  home schedule is light on big-name opponents.

Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette are the nonconference games in Lincoln. Conference foes besides Oklahoma that will visit are Texas Tech, Iowa State and Kansas State.

The new HuskerVision upgrades will cost more than $3 million and are partially funded by NU’s contract with the sports-marketing company IMG.

“We felt if we raised the season-ticket prices about $2 per game, it would also generate about $1.5 million and between that (and the IMG funding), would pretty much pay for the improvements,” Osborne said. “But we also think the fans will benefit from a better venue.”
