Husker recruit upbeat about academic situation

One academic hurdle still remains, but linebacker Eric Martin could not hide the excitement in his voice on Wednesday.

A recent test score had the 2009 Husker signee as jazzed up as he might be after blasting a running back.

Martin recently found out he posted the ACT score he needed to put him on the brink of qualifying to attend Nebraska.

“I’m good right now,” Martin said. “I just got to take these last two summer classes and then I’m done. Finally.”

Martin currently has an A in one of those two classes, and expects to maintain that grade. If he can do that and score a B or better in another English class, he said he’ll have accomplished what is necessary for him to qualify.

The product of Rancho Verde High School in Moreno, Calif., hopes to be in Nebraska by July 9.

One of just two linebackers in NU’s 2009 recruiting class (the other being Chris Williams of Abilene, Texas), the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Martin was considered by some a possible recruiting steal when he committed to Nebraska just a few days before national signing day.

Martin was rated the nation’s No. 26 inside linebacker prospect according to Rivals.com and No. 20 among middle linebackers by Scout.com. Both services gave him three stars. In Martin’s final prep game, he had more than 20 tackles.

“I liked the football environment in Nebraska,” Martin said after committing to the Huskers. “Everything is based off of football. Everywhere you go, that’s all you see, Nebraska football. I wouldn’t mind being a part of it.”
