Recruiting buzz: Win this weekend would be big for NU recruiting
By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star
Taking care of business this Saturday is important to the Huskers for a multitude of reasons. And don’t think recruiting isn’t one of them.
Here’s the thing: At least seven recruits are already anticipated to visit Lincoln on Nov. 7 when the Huskers tangle with Oklahoma.
If Nebraska wins this week, it’s assumed the Huskers will play at either 2:30 or 7 p.m. on ABC. And while a loss by no means guarantees the NU-OU game will fall into the 11:30 a.m. slot on Versus, it makes it a greater possibility.
Morning games are tougher for recruits to attend since many have a game the night before. So an early kick is certainly not what those in the Husker camp would desire on what could be a major recruiting weekend for the program.
One of those expected to visit that weekend is Jay Guy, a four-star defensive tackle from Houston. Guy has offers from Cal, UCLA, Texas Tech, Michigan, Minnesota and Ole Miss.
Also anticipated to attend are defensive end Tobi Okuyemi (Plymouth, Minn.), safety Derrick Malone (Colton, Calif.) and four teammates from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona, Calif.: wide receivers Austin Hill and Tyler Slavin, cornerback Joshua Mitchell and tight end Harold Mobley.
That list very well could grow … or it could shrink if kickoff comes before lunch.
* Inside input: Nebraska’s latest commit, wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, said he was sold on how straightforward Husker coaches were with him in the recruiting process.
“They didn’t beat around the bush,” he said.
It also didn’t hurt that the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Moreno Valley, Calif., got some inside input from Husker true freshman linebacker Eric Martin, a former teammate at Rancho Verde High School.
“We talked a couple times,” Enunwa said. “He told me about the environment and all the stuff that goes around at the school. He helped me out a lot.”
Enunwa is used to winning. His team is 7-0 and won its last game 77-0.
* Irish love: You can erase Gio Bernard’s name from the blackboard of potential Husker recruits.
The four-star running back from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was in Lincoln for the Iowa State game this weekend. He promptly committed to Notre Dame within 48 hours of departing Nebraska. Perhaps he was worried the fumblitis he witnessed could spread.
