NU women lose in Big 12 first round

Playing without the Big 12 offensive player of the year, the Nebraska soccer team lost 3-0 to Oklahoma State in Wednesday’s quarterfinals of the league tournament in San Antonio.
Freshman Morgan Marlborough, the nation’s second-leading scorer with 21 goals, remained at the team hotel after she came down with flu-like symptoms Tuesday night.
“It was unfortunate from a timing standpoint, but that’s probably the one position where we have some depth,” Nebraska coach John Walker said. “We just didn’t play well.”
Nebraska senior defender Carly Peetz and freshman forward Morgan Marlborough were named to the All-Big 12 soccer first team.
It was the third All-Big 12 honor for Peetz, a Lincoln Pius X graduate who started every game of her career at NU.
Marlborough is the third freshman in league history to earn offensive player of the year honors. She was also the league’s rookie of the year.
Sophomore midfielder Molly Thomas was named to the All-Big 12 second team.
Nebraska was shut out for only the third time this season after entering postseason play third nationally in scoring, averaging 3.26 goals per game.
Oklahoma State, meanwhile, posted its fifth shutout in its last six games — all victories.
Though outshot 14-10 by the Huskers, Oklahoma State (13-7) converted two of its five chances in the first half.
Nebraska’s best opportunities came after intermission, but All-Big 12 keeper Adrianna Franch made a save on Shay Powell’s header and the Huskers clanked another scoring chance off the post.
The Huskers (11-5-4) must wait until Monday to learn if they will earn their first NCAA Tournament berth in four years.
Walker is not optimistic. “Realistically,” he said, “that was a game we needed to win.”
