Recent developments in project planning should allow the Nebraska volleyball program to speed up its previously planned move to the Devaney Sports Center by one season.
Plans are ongoing and still need approval, but if the construction of both the new downtown arena, where the basketball teams will play, and renovations to Devaney go as planned, Nebraska would play its first volleyball season at Devaney in 2013, coach John Cook said Wednesday.
The Devaney Sports Center will be remodeled for the volleyball program and the seating reduced to about 7,000. Some work on the outside of the building may still need to be completed after the volleyball program begins playing there.
A change in the timeline would make next season the final one at the NU Coliseum.
"I don't know if it's exciting, but you know the Coliseum sound system went out in the second-round NCAA match, and I just think it's time," Cook said. "There is not enough women's bathrooms, things are breaking over there. It's wearing out, so I think the benefit of going early is people are more comfortable, it gets us more fans and we could potentially generate revenue."
