Even after a jam-packed early signing period, there was still room for Nebraska football to squeeze in more commitments.
Aurora (Colo.) Regis Jesuit cornerback D’Andre Barnes became the final addition to Nebraska’s 2023 recruiting class as he announced his commitment to the Huskers on Wednesday’s National Signing Day.
After signing 23 high school commits during the early signing period in December, Nebraska added five more players on the traditional February signing date. Barnes, a 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback recruit, fits the high-upside mold the Nebraska coaching staff has emphasized in this recruiting cycle.
Barnes has a track and field background as a sprinter in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and he also played on both sides of the field for Regis. Barnes intercepted six passes and made 55 tackles on defense in addition to 785 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said on Wednesday that the school's interest in Barnes only came about when offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was in the Denver area checking in on 2024 recruits. But, when Satterfield decided to make an impromptu stop at Regis Jesuit, the program's head coach alerted Nebraska about Barnes.
“The coach says, 'Hey, listen I’ve got this kid that’s under the radar that no one knows about. Some people are recruiting him, but I think you’re missing out on him,'" Rhule said. "D’Andre signed today, and he hits all the metrics that we look for.”
The Huskers hosted Barnes for an official visit on the last weekend of January’s open contact period and only extended a scholarship offer after getting Barnes on campus.
Barnes chose Nebraska over offers from Air Force, Bowling Green, BYU, Nevada and Wyoming, making him Nebraska’s third cornerback commit and 28th high school addition to its 2023 recruiting class.
